Granada

Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, a city with natural beauty due to the unique architectural legacy

With my program, we took a weekend trip to Córdoba and Granada.  After spending the day in Córdoba, we headed to Granada.  Our first night in Granada consisted of a small hike to a picturesque view of the whole city and ending with a flamenco show in a cave located in the gypsy quarters of town.  Another sight in Granada is the Alhambra, which is a definite must in Granada.  The detail of the Alhambra is so precise and the grounds are massive.  The Alhambra reminded me a little bit of the Palace of Versailles in France except raised from the ground.  The architecture in Granada is very reminiscent of when the Moorish ruled until 1492.  Granada is a very young city that is lively and vibrant and has something for every type of person!

Accommodations

  • My program set up our sleeping arrangements and we stayed in Melia Granada

Restaurants

  • Granada is one of the few remaining cities in Spain that still serves tapas on the house, which means you get free tapas with every drink you get
  • If you order more drink, then the quality of the tapas increases
  • The best area for tapas are on Calle Elvira and Calle Navas, which is where my friends and I went to eat multiple times during out stay here
  • We were also able to find a small schwarma restaurant where you could get a schwarma sandwich, fries, and a drink for 4,50 euro

Cultural Activities

  • As stated before, the Alhambra is a must go to.   Definitely splurge on a guided tour so you don't miss anything in the fortress
  • You can also visit the tombs of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella at the Cathedral and Royal Chapel
  • A great lively experience is watching a flamenco show in Los Tarantos, which is located in a former cave home in Sacromonte (gypsy quarters)
  • The town is also very reminiscent of the past rule so there is an area that holds the Alcaicería.  In this area, there are many shops where I bought a huge tapestry for a cheap price
  • I'm not into snowboarding or skiing but I had a few classmates who went to Granada solely to snowboard at Sierra Nevada.  If you're outdoorsy/athletic then definitely do that!

Clubs/Bars

  • Chupeteria 69 is an amazing bar that has a menu of over 100 different shots for 1 euro.  If you have a certain amount of shots, you can win prizes as well
  • Around Chupeteria 69 are many other bars that you can hop to after you have had enough cheap shots
