When The Holidays Jump from Halloween to Christmas

11/26/2015

Another thing I miss about the States is Thanksgiving.  It's so weird that it jumps from Halloween to Christmas here.  Right on November 1st, stores started to decorate for Christmas and you can see Christmas trees in major areas of Hong Kong.

I definitely miss Thanksgiving especially when I look through everyone's Snap Chat stories about going home and such.  However, my roommates and I were able to hold a Thanksgiving Potluck this past Sunday, which made me feel right at home.  As you can see, we had a lot of food at the potluck and I made mac and cheese, apple pie, and gravy.

Gay Parade to Discovery Bay to Puppy Café

This past month has been a little hectic but, I have been exploring more of Hong Kong.  At the beginning of the month, I accompanied Nigel at the Gay Pride Parade.  The parade started in Victoria Park in Causeway Bay and ended at Tamar Park in Admirality.  The walk is only about 3 km but it took about 3 hours to get through traffic.  Now, places like New York and Los Angeles have huge Gay Pride Parades. Compared to those parades, the one in Hong Kong was small.  They closed some roads but we mostly were confined to one lane while cars passed.  There was a good amount of people but there were many strange looks from pedestrians.  I overheard two locals speaking and one of them asked "what is going on?" And the other local replied, "There's some sort of protest."  Although, Hong Kong has this parade nevertheless, you can tell there still needs to be more awareness for the LGBT community.

A few of my friends and I visited Discovery Bay the day after the Gay Pride Parade.  Discovery Bay is an area on Lantau Island.  The area is really residential and a lot of expats live here with their families.  We decided to go check out the Farmer's Market that takes place every Sunday.  The Farmer's Market has so many booths with vendors from different parts of the world.  The goods ranged from international food to wine to jewelry.  It is an adorable area with a beach right next to it

Halloween in Hong Kong

11/3/2015

Oh Halloween.  The best and the worst holiday of the year.  I didn't know what to expect for Halloween but knew Halloween is only big in the States.  However, Halloween is a bit crazy here in Hong Kong.

I'm used to kids dressing up and going trick or treating but that is not the case here.  I remember in elementary school we would come into school in our costumes and have a Halloween parade.  But, in my school, they do not acknowledge it.
