Amsterdam

A cosy city rich in tradition and an atmosphere that can't be described but should be experienced

My best friend since preschool studied abroad in a small town in France the same time I studied in Spain so naturally we ended up seeing each other in Amsterdam.  The first thing I noticed about Amsterdam were the abundance of canals that run through the city.  It was important that you know what canal you were strolling through so you don't get lost.  Most of the canals look similar and are all lined with bicycles.  This city has such a cosy and warm atmosphere about it with many things to do and see.  There are many famous places such as the Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Red Light District that you should check out.  If you love Heineken, then this is the place for you because the Heineken Factory is located here as well.  I couldn't see the Tulip Fields because I went in February when they obviously weren't in bloom so if you can, go to Amsterdam in the Spring/Summer!

Accommodations

  • I was able to stay in a cheap single at Princess Hostel Museum Square
  • My other friends who traveled here stayed in the Bull Dog Hostel and Flying Pig Hostel
  • Make sure to book early if you're visiting for Queen's Day or 4/20

Restaurants

  • Amsterdam is famous for their pancakes and the best place to get one is The Pancake Bakery.  I got a savory pancake with lox and cream cheese and it was amazing.  I still have dreams about it
  • Walk to Wok is a great place with made to order wok
  • The cheese there is so good and you must get stroopwaffels. Mailing things to the US is cheap (about $20) so get all the cheese and stroopwaffels and send them home!
  • You'll mostly eat a lot of junk food here.  I recommend the fries in a cone
  • Go to All Stars if you want the best bacon ever

Cultural Activities

  • The number one sight that I wanted to see was the Anne Frank House. It was sad to walk through the house but also interesting to see where Anne Frank lived.  Bring tissues because you may tear up
  • Go on a Boat Tour through the canals
  • If you love beer, see how it's made in the Heineken Factory
  • Get a picture with you friends at the IAmsterdam sign, which is right by the Van Gogh Museum too
  • It may be a little out there but go to the Sex Museum and the Red Light District.  Maybe catch a Sex Show too!

Clubs/Bars

  • My friend and I went to a bar where there was live music and bands covering 90s music
  • There are lots of bars and cafés in and around the squares
